The Thermaltake cooler I received from had one major defect. The fan, made a very distinct vibrating noise. The fan sounded as if if would go out on me within a month or so. Day 3 I contacted packed it back up and sent it back for a refund which Amazon did refund completely and pay for the return ship. If it was not for the annoying fan noise I would of kept the cooler. I did not have it long enough to test how well the cooling properties and this Thermaltake laptop cooler performed due to the fan problem. But I can say the aluminum finish, mesh air grill, 230mm fan has the makings of a great cooler. The 230mm completely gave the bottom of laptop full air flow coverage.

Check the video out, you will hear the fan noise:

I definitely do recommend a laptop usb cooling fan pad with ANY laptop. The internal cooling and air flow in a laptop is very limited mainly do to the small tight case. A laptop usb cooling fan will help circulate constant cool air to the bottom of the laptop which is important. Look for one with a fan speed control AND the blows air towards bottom of laptop.
DO NOT expect a huge temperature drop with these coolers, temperatures might drop 4-8 degrees idle or at full load. They are designed to help cool the laptop. If your laptop is over a year old and IS OVERHEATING, the laptop needs to dis-assembled and cleaned. A laptop cooling pad, and a blocked exhaust on the inside of the laptop will not fix the overheat problem at all.
I found adjusting height, position and fan control speed (no fan speed control on this Thermaltake cooler) for optimal cooling and testing helps. I have adjusted height of the laptop on these type coolers by using round felt pads on the corners of the cooler to create more space between laptop and fan cooler for example. These coolers will help in cooling laptop down mainly after “full load”, gaming etc.
I replaced this cooler with a Cooler Master Notepal X2 Laptop Cooler
Quick Summary:

  • Thermaltake Massive23 LX Was Returned – Defective Fan
  • Look For a Laptop Cooler With A Fan Speed Controler
  • Look For a Laptop Cooler That Blows Air Towards Bottom Of Laptop
  • Aluminum or Metal Construction For Better Heat Dissipation
